Despite the efforts of broadcasters, club owners, and sponsors to minimize consequences of canceled matches and empty stadiums, the coronavirus lockdown is still expected to produce a costly financial hit this year.<\/p>\n<p>According to data gathered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/\">SafeBettingSites<\/a>, the combined revenue of the big five European football leagues is expected to amount to \u20ac15.1bn in the 2019\/20 season, a \u20ac1.9bn plunge in a year.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>English Premier League to Lose \u20ac1 Billion <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The revenue of the European football clubs has soared in the last twenty years, driven by a surge in broadcast rights values. In the season 2009\/10, profits of the big five European football leagues amounted to \u20ac8.4bn, revealed Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance 2020. Over the last decade, this figure grew by 115%, reaching \u20ac17bn in the season 2018\/2019.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics show the combined revenue of all English Premier League clubs is expected to plunge by \u20ac1.04bn reaching \u20ac4.8bn in the season 2019\/2020, the most significant financial hit among Europe\u2019s leagues. Nevertheless, teams in the top division in England are expected to generate at least \u20ac1.5 bn more than their counterparts in Germany and Spain, who rank second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_9c74d446-86a3-4477-90da-65c23f89262a\" title=\"European football leagues 2020\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?Ts3\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The reason for that is broadcasting rights. The English Premier League sold the domestic broadcasting rights between 2016 and 2019 for \u00a35bn, while the overseas broadcasting rights for the same cycle were sold for \u00a33bn. This resulted in 20 ELP clubs receiving \u00a32.45bn in broadcasting payment during the 2018\/19 season, or \u00a379.4 million per club.<\/p>\n<p>Deloitte survey shows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/premier-league\/\">Premier League<\/a> clubs are forecast to generate \u20ac2.4 bn from broadcasting rights in the season 2019\/20, nearly \u20ac950 million plunge in a year. Commercial revenues are expected to hit \u20ac1.7bn, a \u20ac139 million increase compared to the last season. As the third-largest revenue stream, matchday profits are forecast to amount to \u20ac614 million in 2020, a \u20ac149 million drop compared to the 2018\/2019 season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Italy&#8217;s Series A to Witness the Second-largest Financial Loss<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The combined revenue of the clubs playing in Germany\u2019s Bundesliga amounted to more than \u20ac3.34bn in the season 2018\/2019. Almost 65% of that amount or more than \u20ac1.4bn came from broadcasting profits. Advertising, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/transfer-betting\/\">transfers<\/a>, and matches generated \u20ac845 million, \u20ac675 million and \u20ac520 million in revenue. Statistics show the teams in the top division in Germany are set to witness their club incomes falling by \u20ac45 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and reaching around \u20ac3.3bn at the end of the season 2019\/2020.<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s Serie A revenue is expected to withstand the second-largest financial hit among big five European leagues, losing around \u20ac395 million this season. Spanish La Liga is forecast to lose \u20ac275 million, with the combined profits of the leading clubs falling to \u20ac3.1bn in 2020.
