As per the numbers gathered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/\">SafeBettingSites.com<\/a>, PL referees have shown 5.13 yellow cards per game, on average, so far this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A significant rise of 21.6% from the previous season in the rate of yellow cards\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-44852 aligncenter\" title=\"PL yellow cards\" src=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/euro-prize-money-7-1024x946.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/euro-prize-money-7-1024x946.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/euro-prize-money-7-300x277.png 300w, https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/euro-prize-money-7-768x710.png 768w, https:\/\/www.safebettingsites.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/euro-prize-money-7.png 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Premier League referees have attracted a lot of attention in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">opening weeks of the season<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for their eagerness to brandish yellow cards.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The new rule regarding punishing players for delaying restarts from free-kicks or dead-ball situations has further impacted the rate at which referees <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are pulling<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> out cards from their pockets<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is the second consecutive season in which Premier League referees <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are showing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> an increased tendency to caution players. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From our comparison of average yellow cards from the 2000-01 season to the ongoing season, it is evident that the average number of yellow cards remained <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">somewhat<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> stable <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> until the 2022-23 season, with some hikes and some lows.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the rate of yellow cards increased sharply during the 2023-24 season, with referees showing an average of 4.22 cards per game. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As compared<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to 3.62 yellow cards\/game in the 2022-23 season, the rate increased by 16.6%. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prior to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the 23-24 season, the 2016-17 season was responsible for most yellow cards with 3.66 per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Referee\u2019s eagerness to caution players in the Premier League seemed to have further strengthened during the ongoing season. And the new directives regarding delaying restarts have further worsened the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At present,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> after seven game weeks or 70 games, referees have shown a total of 359 yellow cards or 5.13 per game.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> This current rate represents a significant increase of 21.6% from the previous season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vyom Chaudhary, an editor at SafeBettingSites.com, said: \u201cAs things stand, it would be interesting to see whether the same rate of cautioning players sustains during the rest of the season. One can expect the Premier League to instruct its referees to be more lenient in the coming days. This was very much evident when the league recently removed its referee Anthony Taylor from refereeing duties for a gameweek following his disastrous performance in Chelsea\u2019s 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
