Betfred is one of the most well-known names on the UK bookmaking scene. It is one common name found as a bookie on the high streets of the UK, as well as online. Betfred has plenty of sports betting opportunities for sports bettors of all kinds, concentrating on the most popular sports for betting in the UK including football, horse racing, greyhounds, darts and snooker. This Betfred review will tell you all you need to know about this popular UK betting brand.

Betfred will need no introduction to most sports betting fans in the UK. Initially created by Fred Done and his brother Peter in 1967, the Fred Done betting brand grew to its peak in the mid-80s with around seventy betting shops dotted all over the British Isles. Fred has done very well for himself, with his fortune estimated to be around £1.87 billion in 2023.
Initially reluctant to expand online, Fred Done, along with several other UK betting companies, saw the outstanding success of bet365 and added an online presence in 2004. At the same time, the company was renamed to ‘Betfred’. Their current betting, bingo, casino and pool licences were awarded by the UKGC in 2014.
Betfred is now run by a company called Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited (the name created from PETer and FREd Done) and is headquartered in Gibraltar. Despite this move, Peter and Fred Done remain domiciled in the UK and are among the leading UK taxpayers. The company opened up a second betting site, OddsKing, but it was not a success and it closed in 2023.
Betfred currently sponsors the Betfred Super League (rugby league), Challenge Cup (rugby league), the British Masters (golf), World Matchplay (darts) and is a partner of Manchester United, the team both Fred and Peter Done support.
Betfred celebrated fifty years in the business in 2017, which must be a clear indication that it is doing something right, as companies which are unsafe or treat their customers unfairly tend not to last over half a century. Having said that, Betfred has had one black mark put against them by the UKGC but it was only a warning and financial penalty of £3.25 million for regulatory failings between October 2019 and December 2020. Since then, Betred have been golden boys as far as the UKGC are involved.
The betting site itself displays many prominent organisations that can help with problem gaming, including Take Time to Think, BeGambleAware, the National Gambling Helpline, GAMSTOP and is a member of the International Betting Integrity Association. Betfred also offers its own Safer Gambling pages.
In terms of the data that you send to and receive from the site, absolutely everything is encrypted. Betfred says that it performs annual PCI-DSS security assessments, which sounds impressive even though we didn’t know what it meant. It actually stands for ‘Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard‘, which means Betfred has its security functions audited every year to make sure they are up to scratch. So, we were right, it is impressive. From this and everything else, we can conclude that Betfred is perfectly safe.
Naturally, if you sign up at Betfred, you get a welcome bonus which should not come as a surprise to anyone reading this Betfred review. It’s a very generous bonus, in that if you bet £10, you will get £50 in bonuses. However, you have to take care as this bonus is only available via the link below (and not if you head directly to the Betfred site), and can only be claimed if you use the welcome code ‘WELCOME50’.
So, click the button below and then ‘Claim Here’ on the page that then appears. This will take you to the Betfred sign-up process which you will have to complete. Don’t forget to include that ‘WELCOME50’ bonus code when you are required to enter it, or you just won’t get your bonus.
The bonus comes with terms and conditions, which is another thing that will come as no surprise to readers of this Betfred review. We suggest you read the T&Cs at the site, but we are going to go through all the major ones for you.
First up, you need to deposit at least £10 using a debit card within seven days of signing up at the Betfred sports betting site. Then make any qualifying bet of £10 (as your first bet and for at least £10) at least odds of Evens (2.00) that is going to be settled also within your first seven days of membership. If you bet on the Totepool, any virtual market or you cash out your bet, then you will no longer be eligible for this offer.
10bet offer | Offer description | Wager requirement | Minimum Odds | Offer expiry | Min deposit |
Welcome bonus | Bet £10 Get £50 in Bonuses | None | Evens (2.0) | 7 days | £10 |
Betfred does of course have plenty of other offers however to keep matters fresh, the site likes to mix them up all the time. For the best offers make sure you use the link above and check out the ‘Promotions’ tab on the menu. Look out for special deals for big events, such as Betfred Grand National promos, or for the FIFA World Cup or Wimbledon.
We’ve selected three Betfred deals available at the time of this Betfred review, but make sure you check the site to see if they are still available.
This deal applies to all pre-match football accumulators of five or more selections on selected markets. Minimum odds of 1/2 (1.50) per leg. You can get a bonus from 2.5 percent to 50 percent depending upon how many legs your acca contains. Alternatively, if one of your legs fails you can bet a full refund in cash up to £10. All bonuses are paid within 24 hours of your bet being settled. Bets on in-play markets or that are cashed-out are not eligible. Other terms and conditions apply.
With this Betfred promotions football deal, if you bet on a first goalscorer in a match eligible for this deal and they go on to score a brace or a hat-trick, you get double or triple the odds. Only available on pre-match singles placed on specified double delight & hat trick heaven first goalscorer markets in selected games. Paid out as cash and settled once the match has been completed. Note that goals scored in Extra Time do not count, and other terms and conditions apply.
One for Betfred horse racing fans now, for specific races in the daily and UK and Irish sports betting markets, you can get ‘super’ Betfred extra places. This could be two places instead of win only, four instead of three, five instead of three or even six places instead of four. Note that this applies to each-way bets only, and applies to singles and multiples. Doesn’t apply to ante-post bets and Best Odds Guaranteed does not apply here either. Check the site for full terms and conditions.
So what have we learned so far about this enormous UK betting site via our Betfred review? Well, we’ve told you about who owns it, a little of its history and we’ve gone into a few promos. Now let’s learn muchly about the sports book itself.
The layout of the Betfred betting site is not likely to appeal to everyone, and we admit it’s a little bit clumsy. It is okay to find the in-play, horse racing and football sections, but everything else is just slammed into ‘All Sports’ which takes a little more in the way of searching. What’s especially annoying is you can go straight to other aspects of the Betfred brand – casino, live casino, lotto, virtual world (virtual sports), bingo, poker and totepool – all in one click.
We can understand why a betting brand wants to make all its gambling options available via one site, but we prefer it if sports betting and casino-style options have a very definite divide. Not everyone who likes to bet on sports plays slots and casino games, and not everyone who likes to play slots and casino games likes to bet on sports.
The following are the sports you can bet on at Betfred:
It’s a decent list but we’ve seen other sites with better options, and eSports is a particular miss. Betfred is a huge company so it can afford to offer competitive odds and indeed it claims to do so, but just how competitive are they? We’ve taken some odds at the time of this review and compared them to the best odds we could find anywhere in the UK. Betfred offers these odds for the 2024 FA Cup, which at the time was at the fifth round stage. As you can see, Betfred’s odds were reasonably competitive and indeed they managed to offer the best odds for the favourites for the competition, Manchester City. Betfred also applies ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’ on all UK and Irish horse races, plus selected international races. Sadly, this promotion does not apply to most system bets and Tote bets and does not apply to greyhound racing or any other sports. The minimum accepted stake at Betfred is set at £0.5o, which is high when compared to other UK sports betting sites (some allow you to bet for as little as a penny). There is no maximum stake, but there are some maximum payouts that you need to consider. The maximum payout is a stunning £1,000,000 which, in our experience, is bettered elsewhere by only one other site in the UK. This maximum payout only applies to UK football and Betfred horse racing though. Other sports, leagues and competitions have their own payout limits, which you can check at the site. They are all suitably generous though. The minimum deposit accepted via the Betfred online betting site is £5, although it’s a tenner if you deposit in person at a Betfred betting shop, and a whopping £85 if you do it via a bank account. There’s no minimum withdrawal, but withdrawals under £5 have to be requested as they can’t be done via the site’s online cashier. The live betting section that Betfred offers is decent, but we have seen better. Just click the ‘in play’ button on the menu for the latest live action. The main sports for live play are Betfred football, tennis, snooker, basketball and ice hockey, but anything that is up-and-running is usually available for live betting if it is a sport that Betfred covers. You can also click on the ‘Upcoming’ button to see which events will be available for live betting soon. There is some live streaming at Betfred. You can bet live at the site and then watch the action as the play progresses. The main sport for live streaming at Betfred seems to be tennis, but some snooker and darts is covered too. In terms of football, there’s decent coverage of the Bundesliga but no UK football live streaming at all which is to be expected. ALL UK and Ireland horse races are available for live streaming at Betfred, as long as you are signed into your account. The same goes for UK greyhound meets. We’ve gone through most things you need to know about the Betfred sports betting site, but there are a couple more aspects you might be interested in: PYP Builder – ‘PYP’ stands for PickYourPunt (Betfred’s, space-free spelling) and is Betfred’s version of a bet builder. It is available for most Betfred football matches, but football matches only. You can combine specific events of the same game to boost your odds and winnings if they all come to fruition. Daily Price Boosts – Fred is a fan of boosting prices and you can see the day’s boosted odds that Betfred offers via the Daily Price Boosts tab. All are usually combos or event-specific bets, such as Bukayo Saka scoring a goal for Arsenal in the first half. Virtual – Betfred has plenty of virtual sports that you can bet on such as horse racing. The graphics are outstanding. Other sports in Fred’s virtual world are greyhounds, football, motor racing, speedway, darts, cycling and tennis (and bingo which is included for some reason). Betfred has some examples of pool betting, stemming from their ownership of The Tote between 2011 and 2019 (when they sold it for a £150m loss). Pool betting differs from fixed odds betting in that all stakes are pooled together, a percentage then removed and paid to Betfred online, and then shared between the winners. Totepool betting is only available on Betfred horse racing and is more akin to lottery-style hopeful betting than dedicated horse racing gambling. If you can pick six out of six winners on the Totepool betting though, you could win over £1,000,000! Betfred does have a help section but it fails perhaps to go into as much detail as is needed. If and when you need greater levels of help, the following support channels can be used: With Betfred, we’re pleased to say that both signing up for a Betfred account and using a promo code, are extremely quick and easy for new UK customers. To make things crystal clear, though, here’s a step-by-step guide on exactly what you need to do. Click the ‘Visit Betfred’ button below whether you’re using a computer or mobile device – and click ‘Register’ to begin the sign-up process. You must now enter a username and password for your new account. You’ll also need to agree to the Betfred.com full T&Cs before progressing further. Click ‘Continue’ when you’ve finished the first stage to head to step 2. Here, you’ll be asked to provide your name and date of birth in another registration form. Once you’ve done so, hit ‘Continue’ again. This stage is extremely straightforward, simply requiring you to enter your contact details and create a security question. Here, you must enter your home address in a further registration form. Before making a withdrawal, you will need to provide a piece of evidence displaying the same address you provide at this stage. So, be sure to enter it correctly! The fifth and final stage in creating your account involves two important parts. Firstly, you can adjust some settings for your account. Secondly, this is also the time to enter a Betfred Promo Code. You can do this by expanding the ‘Add a Promo Code?’ section, and then copying and pasting your promotional code of choice into the box. Enter ‘WELCOME50, for example, to get £50 in free bets when you stake at least £10, courtesy of the Betfred sign-up offer. Like many of the best betting apps, the Betfred app can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices. This includes smartphones and tablets, with the user experience being good across the board. The design of the app is almost identical to the main Betfred sportsbook site. This makes transitioning to Betfred mobile easy. Browsing markets and utilising additional features is simple too, with conveniently placed menus and tabs being found. The betting experience is only enhanced by the sheer volume of additional features found on the app. Live streaming, cash out, live betting, bet builder and bet finder are very appealing. Betfred mobile also looks after app users well, with 24/7 customer support being available via live chat. Meanwhile, the bookie is associated with BeGambleAware (begambleaware.org), helping to promote responsible gambling at all times. Logging in, placing bets and withdrawing funds are all simple tasks via the Betfred app too. Touch/Face ID login is available, while payouts are processed quickly. A good number of payment methods are accepted, allowing for instant deposits too. Promo codes are one of the most popular ways to deliver special offers to online customers. As in other industries, they are extremely effective when it comes to sports betting. In this case, for example, you can enter a Betfred promotions code to access the excellent ‘Bet £10, Get £50 in Free Bets’ sports welcome offer. Thus, by typing in the simple code WELCOME50, you can effectively quadruple your initial spending power. That particular code can only be used by new customers at Betfred. In fact, at the time of writing, there are no promo codes for existing customers. If you want to check out codes from other top sports betting sites in the UK, check out the details here:
We’ve already said that we don’t admire betting sites that intertwine their sports betting offering with their slots and casino games, but we’re going to include a Betfred casino review anyhow! We’re doing this for those peeps who enjoy their slots and casino games just as much as their sports betting. There are plenty of slots and top casino games available at Betfred online. The casino is actually split in three, just to complicate matters. The ‘casino’ only features games from Playtech, and includes their ‘Age of the Gods’ franchise series of slots, plus plenty of Playtech’s casino games and exclusive Betfred titles for live roulette and blackjack. If you move to the ‘live casino’ you’ll find only games that have live dealers, so no slots. There’s roulette, blackjack, baccarat and other casino classics plus ‘game shows’, including Mega Lucky Ball and Adventures Beyond Wonderland. Finally, we have ‘Vegas’ with slots and casino games from other providers beyond Playtech, including Pragmatic Play and Microgaming. This section is mainly slots, though. Betfred also has sections for Betfred bingo (bingo rooms plus slots side games) and poker (speed poker, MTTs, cash games and SNGs). If you enjoy buying lottery tickets then you might be interested in Betfred’s lottery section. Here you can bet on the Betfred lotto results for lotteries all over the globe! Note, that you are not actually buying lottery tickets for these lotteries, but instead, you are betting on the numbers being drawn (up to a maximum of five). There are big prizes available, and the available lotteries are listed below: The available payment options at Betfred cover all the big guys, but beyond that, there’s very little else. The payment methods are debit cards, Skrill, Neteller, PayPal, Paysafecard and bank transfers at a push. The minimum deposit accepted is £5, and there is no minimum withdrawal although withdrawals less than £5 have to be directly requested via support. You can find the payment information about Betfred summarised in the table below: We are now coming to the end of our Betfred review, so we are going to summarise what we have found in terms of pros and cons. What aspects of the Betfred betting site (and the gambling options as a whole) did we like, and what were we not as enamoured with? Betfred has been around for well over half a century now, and if we were betting men (which we are) then we’d be willing to put money on Betfred making it to a century. Fred and Peter Done have built a great betting business empire that we are happy to recommend to you. We hope that you have found this Betfred review useful and informative, and can now make an informed decision about whether Betfred is the safest and best site for you. You’ve nothing to lose by giving it a look, and of course, you can claim that welcome bonus, no problem! Bet £10 Get £50 in Bonuses Bet £10 Get £50 in Bonuses We’ve listed every current Betfred promo code towards the top of this page. We’ll be sure to update this article if and when they change, so keep checking back for new deals. Yes. It’s ‘WELCOME50’, and this should be entered when new players sign up (as detailed in the ‘How to Sign Up and Redeem a Betfred Promo Code’ section, above). The Betfred new customer offer gives you a £50 free bet, in exchange for a £10 spend. If you’re a newcomer, the first way to get a free bet is to use the aforementioned Betfred promo code for their sign up offer. Thereafter, you can get them using one of several ongoing promotions. Some give you them as refunds for losing wagers, while others reward a smart pick with a free bet. Yes. The Betfred sports mobile app is available on both iOS and Android devices, and replicates almost all the functionality of the desktop site. Do be aware that - if you want to use the online casino too, to take advantage of a casino bonus, play casino games or live casino - you’ll need a separate app for that. There are also further apps for Betfred Bingo, and for betting on the lotto (including Betfred Irish lottery markets). You have plenty of payment options on Betfred, including debit cards (Visa and Mastercard), and e-Wallets like PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller. Do remember that none of the e-Wallet options are eligible for the initial SPORTS70 Betfred promo code, however, before making your first deposit.
