With the news that Gareth Southgate has stepped down after eight years in charge, fans are desperate to know who will be the next England manager.
Lots of names are already circling, but none has seen a more dramatic rise in search interest than Lee Carsley.
The current England U21’s head coach has been heavily linked with the senior job, sparking a sudden explosion in search interest in the 24 hours since Southgate’s departure was confirmed.
Using Google Trends, SafeBettingSites has compared search interest for the top five England manager candidates, finding that Lee Carsley has been searched more than any other name.
Google Trends gives search terms a value from 0-100 over a given period, with 100 being the peak search interest. A value of 50 is therefore half as much interest.
Key Data Points:
- Lee Carsley had the highest search interest of any England manager candidate in the 24 hours following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
- Graham Potter’s search interest was second highest, at 87 compared to Carsley’s 100.
- Despite being many bookies’ favourite, Eddie Howe only ranked third for search interest.

Lee Carsley Tops Search Interest
With the highest peak search interest of any England manager candidate, Lee Carsley is clearly a name fans are keen to get more familiar with.
The former Derby County and Everton midfielder retired in 2011 after amassing 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
He took over as caretaker manager of Coventry City in 2012 and has worked with Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City’s youth teams.
Carsley has been head coach of England U21’s since 2021, having managed the U20’s in 2020.
Graham Potter A Frontrunner For England Job
A more familiar name for many will be Graham Potter’s. With odds around 5/2, Potter is among the favourites to succeed Gareth Southgate.
After enjoying great success as Brighton manager, Potter had a difficult spell with Chelsea in 2022/23, and has not managed since.
But amid heavy speculation, it seems the national team job may be about to tempt him back into management.
Will Eddie Howe Leave Newcastle United?
Reports from Tyneside suggest Newcastle United are desperate to keep Eddie Howe as their manager.
A popular figure, Howe took the Magpies back to the Champions League last season after a 20-year wait.
But while he may wish to end Newcastle’s long trophy drought before departing, the offer of becoming England’s next manager may prove too tempting to refuse.
A Shock Appointment For Klopp?
An outside bet for the England manager’s job is recently departed former Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp.
The German is currently around 8/1 for the role, having recently turned down an offer to manage the USA men’s national team.
Klopp would be some statement from the FA, but it seems highly unlikely at this stage.
Potential For Pochettino
And last but not least, former Southampton and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked to England.
At around 10/1 at the moment, he appears to be further down the list of likely candidates, but could yet be approached by the FA for the role.
Although he saw comfortably the smallest jump in search interest following the departure of Gareth Southgate, Poch is still a name that fans have been looking up increasingly over the past 24 hours.
