Sheffield gambling billboards are set to be banned after the City Council discussed a new policy on changes to regulations regarding external advertising earlier this week.
Sheffield Gambling Advertisements Set To Be Prohibited
The City Council’s finance committee met on Monday earlier this week to discuss and approve changes to external advertising via billboards in the region.
This resulted in a new policy set out that would see the promotion of gambling, fast food, vaping and fossil fuel-related brands banned entirely.
Billboards under the control of the council will see major changes, and the new policy is set to come into effect as of next month, seeing all advertisements for betting and gambling products banned. Companies and services related to that sphere will also be prohibited.
The changes will be part of a huge overhaul of advertising in the city in a bid to safeguard the health of people, whilst giving local brands the chance to advertise.
Looking forward to the changes, Councilor Zahira Naz, chair of the committee said the new policy is “ambitious” adding: “We have to limit exposure to products that are contradicted to better outcomes for people and the planet.
“I think this policy is going in the right direction on that but we have also taken a balanced approach to ensure that Sheffield can still attract ambitious opportunities for the city, allow support for local businesses.”
Changes Happening Across The Nation
Plenty of constituencies across the country are taking extra measures in stopping the advertisements of gambling among other things, including Bristol and London.
Recently though, Bristol University students conducted research into social media gambling ads, finding that gambling content marketing via social media platforms is difficult to be recognised, regardless of the age of those seeing it.
Only 43% of young adults aged 11-17 were able to identify gambling content marketing as advertising, with the result for adults aged 18+ a little higher. 65% of adults successfully identified it, giving a balanced view.
