In an exclusive interview with SafeBettingSites.com, darts star Dimitri Van Den Bergh revealed that Peter Wright has over 500 sets of darts at his home and explained how Damon Heta and his wife helped him settle in the UK.
The ‘Dream Maker’ also touched on the friction between him and Belgian World Cup teammate Kim Huybrechts, as well as his hopes for Premier League glory next season.
Interview Highlights:
- Peter Wright’s obsessive darts collection is taking over his house
- Living with fellow pro Damon Heta in the house of darts
- New Belgian players could take Kim Huybrechts place in WC team
- Determination to prove I can reach Premier League finals night
Peter Wright’s insane darts collection now tops 500 sets
Dimitri Van den Bergh lived with Peter Wright during Covid and he was able to examine the flamboyant Scotsman’s extensive collection of darts first hand;
“During Covid when I was living at his house I said bring me every set of darts you have because I want to check them all out. I think it was like 360 sets but that was then and we’re a few years down the line now. He said it’s probably around 500 sets now. For him he feels that he can play with darts to a certain potential but then he cannot go further. But he can with a different dart.”
Damon Heta and his wife helped us find ‘house of darts’
Van den Bergh and his wife moved from Belgium to the UK and Australian Damon Heta and his wife went out of their way to help them settle down. The two couples ended up living together in Leicester in an ideal situation for the two pro players;
“I have to say a big thank you to Meaghan and Damon Heta because with them we managed to find a place to live. They put a whole lot of effort in behind the scenes because we were just stuck in Belgium. It made playing through the Covid-19 times so much easier and better because straightaway I had one of the world’s best darts players as a practice partner. My manager loved everything about it because everything about the house was focused on darts. The house of darts in Leicester!”
Up-and-coming Belgian players threaten Huybrechts’ WC spot
Kim Huybrechts and Van den Bergh put their differences aside to help Belgium reach the World Cup semi-final in Germany this summer but there’s every chance that the team could have a new look next year;
“I know that the other Belgian players on the tour are very motivated to wear the national colours and perform for their country. I’ll just do my very best to make sure that I’m in it and then just see who’s going to be my partner. From the start until now I’ve always partnered up with Kim. There were years when he was Belgium’s No.1 and at some point it turned around and he became No.2 but it was always me and him.”
Premier League glory is my aim – I’m mentally stronger now
The ‘Dream Maker’ won the final regular Premier League event in Aberdeen last season. He is determined to go one better and reach finals night, should he be selected once again next year;
“100 per cent I would love to be back there and qualify for finals night. Being picked alone is a huge honour when you’ve got 120 professionals on the tour doing whatever they can to be picked. My first year in the Premier League was Covid affected so it wasn’t the full experience. But in some ways last year was harder because you’re away from home more but I learned so much and mentally I’m now so much stronger.”
